NO PLACE LIKE HOME
CELEBRATING REFUGEE JOURNEYS

29 August 2018

What a very special evening!

Thank you to everyone who attended No Place Like Home - Celebrating Refugee Journeys.

Nearly 300 members of the St Bernard’s community chose to come out (on a school night!) and bear witness to four fellow human beings sharing their stories and a relentless advocate sharing the facts about the situation refugees and asylum seekers face in Australia.

We cannot thank our speakers enough for participating in the event. It is our job now to share their stories.

Thank you as well for your generosity. The donations on the night were the highest of all our events to date. Each charity nominated by a speaker will receive a portion of the donations.

- 29 August 2018

Facilitated by SBC senior students, our three guests presented their stories:

o BWE THAY, Burmese Refugee, Migrant Student and Community Liaison Officer at Swinburne University of Technology, member of the Refugee Tertiary Education Committee (RTEC)

o BRIGID ARTHUR, co-founder of Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project (BASP) and tireless advocate for refugees

o BIONG DENG BIONG,  Sudanese Refugee, Executive Officer at Edmund Rice Services Limited (ERCRS)

o MIKHAEL TOUMA, Syrian Refugee, Year 11 SBC student, Member of the Student Council

o MAJAK DAW,  - NOW BY VIDEO - Sudanese Refugee from the Sudan Civil War, North Melbourne footballer, AFL Diversity Ambassador, First Sudanese Australian drafted to an AFL Club

UPDATE ON SPEAKERS - Majak Daw

23 August 2018

The St Bernard's College Social Justice Network is disappointed to announce that we have been informed by North Melbourne Football Club that Majak Daw is no longer available to speak at our event in person.

The players will be on a trip to Sydney as the club is not in contention for finals. Mikhael Touma, student and speaker, has been invited to North Melbourne Football Club to interview Majak, which will be filmed and shown at the event.

While we understand how eager many ticket holders were to hear Majak Daw speak in person, we know the event will be another inspirational and thought-provoking night for everyone, as we celebrate the contributions of refugees and asylum seekers to our nation through hearing their stories.

If you no longer wish to attend the evening, it would be very helpful for catering and event management purposes if you update your booking via Eventbrite.

You can do this by clicking "View or manage order" in  the Your Tickets email you received from Eventbrite or via your Eventbrite account or the mobile app.

We apologise for any disappointment and thank you for your support.
