Hutch Hussein

Hutch Hussein is currently the Senior Manager, Refugees, Immigration & Multiculturalism (RIM) at the Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL),which involves overseeing its Ecumenical Migration Centre (EMC, Fitzroy) and African Australian Community Centre (AACC, Footscray), as well undertaking refugee policy advocacy.
Hutch has a background in Social Work and over the past 15 years she has worked and advocated with and for at risk young people, family violence victims and in the field of adult mental health, settlement, and, whilst in London, in foster care. She has held senior management positions over the past 11 years, including as Deputy CEO of Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre, where she and her team skilled up refugee community leaders in leadership and media training so that they could advocate for themselves.
In addition to her Social Work degree, she has a Bachelor of Arts and is also a recipient of the Vincent Fairfax “Ethics in Leadership” Fellowship. In between her social work positions, Hutch worked for nearly four years as a Ministerial Adviser in the Victorian State Government in the Education & Women’s Affairs portfolios, which gave her an insight into how to lobby governments around issues.
