Andrew Gurrisi

Picture
Andrew completed his VCE at St Bernard’s College in 2008 followed by a Commerce Degree at Swinburne University of Technology. He worked in Finance for two years whilst studying. When looking for a change from the office environment he did volunteer work over the holiday breaks with Edmund Rice Camps and was later offered a position at Mackillop Family Services as a residential carer.  Residential care is where children are removed from their families due to unsafe circumstances i.e drugs, abuse, neglect etc by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and placed in residential housing units throughout Victoria.

In 2014, Andrew took part in a cultural immersion through the Edmund Rice Network in Kenya and Tanzania as a mutual learning experience. On his return from Africa, he decided youth work was where he belonged. He moved from residential care into a more custodial environment of work in Youth Justice for DHHS at Parkville Youth Justice Precinct, as well as currently Co-Facilitating an East African Immersion Program through the Edmund Rice Centre in Amberley. Andrew has also been an Emerald Hill Mission Food Van Volunteer & Co-ordinator since 2012.
